Tennis(2) Part 2 In 1789, tennis-lover King Louis XVI of France excluded many important members of society from a meeting. These people were all very upset so they had their own meeting on a tennis court. While there, they signed a document called the Tennis Court Oath. Over 500 men swore to be loyal to the people of France and not the King. This event marked the beginning of the French Revolution. During this time, tennis nearly disappeared in Europe. The people destroyed everything that had to do with the King. After the French Revolution ended, tennis became even more popular. In the 1870s, a new form of the game appeared - lawn tennis. This was great for players because all the tennis courts were now made the same. Tennis became a sport of the rich, and it was important to be polite to your opponent as well as the fans. Today, men's and women's tennis are popular far and wide. Professionals make millions of dollars every year. People of all walks of life love to go to the nearest court and hit a ball over a net to each other.
