Part 1
Many sports which use balls, bats, or rackets have been traced back to ancient Greece or Rome. However, the actual game of tennis took shape in 13th century France. It was called jeu de paume, the game of the palm. It began in monastery courtyards and was also played indoors in long, narrow rooms. At first, people hit balls with their hands. But as time went on, they put on gloves. Wooden bats and rackets then came later.

Over the years, tennis has experienced a lot of ups and downs. Monks loved playing tennis so much that they would skip out on then duties at the monasteries. King Louis IX of France was the first leader to ban tennis. England soon followed because people were tennis instead of learning archery, a skill that would help out in war. However, people loved to play tennis so much that they would ignore the law. By 1600, there were more than 2,000 indoor and outdoor [www.enbus.cn 免费英语学习网站]
courts in France.
